Real Steel se basa en parte del relato "Steel", escrito por el legendario maestro de la ciencia ficción Richard Matheson, que fue adaptado para un episodio de la célebre serie "La dimensión desconocida" (The Twilight Zone) protagonizado por Lee Marvin en 1963. La prolífica carrera de Matheson abarca más de 50 años y muchas de sus populares novelas, entre ellas "The Incredible Shrinking Man", "Stir of Echoes", "What Dreams May Come", "Somewhere in Time" and "The Night Stalker", han sido adaptadas y convertidas en largometrajes. Matheson ingresó en el Hall de la Fama de la Ciencia Ficción en 2010. Y ya tardó en hacerlo, él sí que es leyenda.
The Box (2009) había sido una de las última adaptaciones de sus historias al cine, también extraída de una episodio de The Twilight Zone. A Richard Matheson lo decepcionó esa adaptación como a la mayoría de la gente.
Sin embargo le gustó lo que hicieron con Real Steel y eso es suficiente razón para no dejarla pasar.

Disney have announced the US DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Real Steel on 24th January 2012. Set in the not-so-distant future where boxing has gone high-tech and 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots have taken over the ring, the film stars Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo, Kevin Durand and Anthony Mackie.
