RaroVideo to Bring Rare Italian Films to U.S. Viewers
Italian DVD label RaroVideo, known for successfully restoring rare films from legendary filmmakers, has just announced that the company will begin distributing its critically acclaimed DVDs through Entertainment One in the United States for the first time next February.
To start, RaroVideo will highlight two giants of Italian cinema with Federico Fellini’s hard-to-find The Clowns (1970) and The Fernando Di Leo Crime Collection, a four-disc set. They both arrive Feb. 22, 2011.
The Clowns’ DVD featurettes offer a rare and exclusive short film by Fellini, a video essay about the genesis of the project and a 40-page booklet with exclusive drawings by the director. This 1970 film presents a unique blend of memoir and documentary, which combines a circus of fiction with reality, wherein Fellini plays the role of ringmaster.
Master of ultra-violent stories about pimps and petty gangsters, director and writer Fernando Di Leo’s collection includes “Milieu Trilogy” – Caliber 9 (Milano Calibro 9), The Italian Connection (La Mala Ordina) and The Boss (Il Boss). The set’s final disc includes 1976’s Rulers of the City, starring veteran movie actor Jack Palance as a mob boss.
All four Di Leo films were digitally restored and remastered in collaboration with the Venice Film Festival, and each features a number of extras, including a documentary about each motion picture.
Director Quentin Tarantino has cited Di Leo as a major influence in his work.
“The two killers in The Italian Connection inspired me to conceive of Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield for Pulp Fiction,” Tarantino said. “The Italian Connection is work of a genius.”
RaroVideo will continue to introduce the works of major Italian directors to U.S. audiences next year as it plans to release Michelangelo Antonioni’s The Vanguished (I Vinti), Pier Paolo Pasolini’s The Anger (La Rabbia) and Carmelo Bene’s Our Lady of the Turks (Nostra signora dei Turchi).
