Michael (Robert De Niro), Nick (Christopher Walken) y Steven (John Savage) son tres amigos de un pequeño pueblo de Pensilvania que trabajan en una fábrica y que en sus ratos libres se dedican a beber y a cazar ciervos. Su vida rutinaria cambia repentinamente cuando son llamados a filas y enviados a Vietnam. Una vez allí son capturados por el vietcong, que los mantiene prisioneros en condiciones infrahumanas. Cuando logran escapar, Michael y Steven regresan a los Estados Unidos, pero Nick regresa a Saigón para cumplir una promesa y termina ganándose la vida con el mismo juego mortal al que sus captores le habían sometido.
